Sevin Sins review by Dennis Heiskill
Review: Sevin Sins, by Dennis Heiskill
“Let me be your fantasy” sings Maria Kanellis, from the title track of her debut EP “Sevin Sins.” The former WWE diva doesn’t have to ask twice – as the April 2008 playboy cover girl and current contestant on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice has caught the eyes of men all over the world during her time as a WWE diva. With all of her aforementioned major media successes, it’s almost unbelievable that she could conquer yet another arena to become a crossover hit – but after listening to her EP every day since its release date on April 13th, I have to say that Maria’s talent is endless.
The first song on the EP, “Alice In Wonderland,” is Kanellis’s most versatile. It starts off as a simple, playful groove, then subtly shifts into a more energetic lyrical piece. Maria doesn’t show favorites in genres with this song, as her vocal talent alone can let her move from softer arrangements like this to hard hitting rock with comfort and ease. This song is a good example of not letting genre lines get in the way of a good song.
The lead single, Fantasy, is an incredible vocal piece and the most powerful song on the album. The lyrics display a heartbreaking cry for love, but the music itself seems a bit edgier, almost angry at times. Maria’s vocals are definitely at her best in this song. “Change Your Mind” continues with the same theme, although a little more somber. The song is also very sexual, but stops just short of profane. It gives the EP the emotional underpinning that it needs.
The song “Sevin Sins” ends the EP, and can be described as a rock song with twisted lyrics. This is another favorite of mine, with Maria’s vocals blending nicely with the music itself. While the lyrics are somewhat sad, and seem to represent a dilemma, the music lifts it up and presents the song as an upper – not a downer.
In the end, Maria’s vocal talent is excellent. The EP leaves you wanting more, but also shows what makes Maria Kanellis irresistible. It’s a great mix of emotion, sex, charisma and good hooks. If you’re a fan of rock music combined with great lyrics and great vocals, I would definitely recommend heading over to iTunes and buying Maria’s album.
